Over the COVID-19 pandemic, many people turned to their favorite vendors’ online clothing stores to shop for their fashion essentials. Many companies switched their brand into an online e-commerce platform while some did a complete transition into the world of e-commerce to save money. While shopping online does have its perks of convenience for shoppers, retailers continue to practice harmful unsustainable practices of manufacturing clothing.

Why Shop Second Hand?

Many people seem to think second-hand shopping is only for people who can’t afford to shop retail, or they have negative predisposed thoughts surrounding the idea of rental fashion, ex. thinking it’s unhygienic to shop from vintage stores. However, this is not the case with most rental platforms. Renting clothing has numerous benefits and consists of a large community of devoted individuals encouraging other to find ethical ways of shopping sustainably. Here a list of reasons why renting clothing is not all that bad:

1. Not COVID-19 friendly/hygienic

During the pandemic, many consumers were understandably concerned with shopping second hand in fear of further spread of COVID-19, however, that is not the case. Renting clothing is just as safe as buying clothing online through large retailers. Most rental clothing businesses have a procedure for new incoming clothes. Many pieces are washed or dry cleaned before they are put up for rent. These clothing pieces have been used and loved before and have been worn in, but that doesn’t take away from the possibility of it being used and loved again by someone new!

2. Affordability

Many people think that these platforms exist solely for the people who can’t afford to shop retail. This is not true! Many people prefer to rent clothing pieces for a number of reasons including trying out different styles to only shopping for a certain once in a lifetime occasion. There’s no need to hold onto an expensive dress that you are only going to wear one and then throw in the back of your closet.

3. Not Trendy

Many people think that vintage clothes are ones to never see the light of day again. This is not true because time and time again we have seen many vintage trends and pieces come back to life again! As of late, many retailers are holding new clothing pieces inspired from the early 2000s. Cargo pants, platform sandals, and low-rise jeans are back in trend now more than ever and the true “authentic” vintage pieces of clothing are some of the most sought-after pieces online!

4. Taking Away Resources from Others

This is an understandable statement made from people who can afford to shop retail, however, do it for the wrong reasons. There are many people online trying to desperately to get people to rent their clothing or promote their own small business in the world of sustainability and only seem to find their target audience from low-income consumers. This is not the aim for many of the sellers. They have the aim of getting people to rent/buy their clothing in order to make ends meet. Also, in the world of sustainable fashion, there is no shortage of clothes and items for sale, there are enough good for everyone. It’s normal for businesses to have variations in their inventory, however, they are not empty. There are still goods available to rent/buy for anyone who wants them.

5. They Only Carry low-end Brands

Many rental fashion platforms have a number of brands to choose from, all ranging from low-end brands to high-end brands. In fact, many rental platforms have access to higher end fashion pieces, and they are the most in demand in the rental industry. If you look long and hard enough many brands such as Anthropology, Lululemon, and Free People can be found online. High-end retailers such as Coach, Jimmy Choo, and Tory Burch items such as handbags and clothing can be found for rent as well. Rental companies have a variety of styles and looks to choose from guaranteeing that everyone can find something in their personal style range.
