Who else has drawers full of unused clothes, racks of once-worn shoes, and dozens of dresses and animal-print jackets that no longer fit? If this is what your closet looks like, you need a closet makeover! Here are some styling tips of basics and closet essentials that you should know about!
Denim Jeans
100% cotton. For the perfect, long-lasting pair of denim jeans in your closet, it is best to invest in a pair that is high-quality. Although 100% cotton might make the jeans feel a little stiff, this is the most durable quality out there. If you’re looking for a little more stretch, look for a pair made of 95% cotton and 5% recycled elastane.
One of our recommended brands is Re/Done. Don’t let the price tag scare you! Paying $100-300 for a pair of denim blue jeans may sound crazy, but investing in one that will last years and years is a better deal than buying one for $20 that only lasts a month. You wouldn’t want to rip your jeans in the crotch now, would you? Well, if that day does happen (knock on wood), Re/Done guarantees free repairs for life! So not only will you look amazing in those Re/Done jeans, but you’re being sustainable too! Some other sustainable brands you can look at include: Levi’s, Madewell, and Afends (an Australian sustainable brand).
Denim Jacket
The same applies for denim jackets – look for 100% cotton for long-lasting durability. Denim jackets are easy-finds in thrift stores too, no matter the size (oversized jackets are very trendy nowadays, after all). Like denim jeans, you will want to invest in some high-quality denim jackets since you’ll be wearing them on a daily basis. I personally even wear an authentic 90’s Giordano denim jacket that my mom passed down to me! Nearly 25 years later, they’re still my favourite (even if it’s missing one pocket)!
White Blouse
Date night, job interview, professional Zoom call… the white blouse is a necessity for those days you need to be a bit dressier. They can dress up any casual bottoms you have, so you look casual and polished at the same time. Need to go to a business casual event, but don’t know what to wear? Put on that ironed white button-up blouse, and you’re good to go!
Sweaters
100% silk. 100% cashmere. These are the materials you want to be on the lookout for whilst thrift shopping or buying second-hand. Both silk and cashmere are materials that age well and are made to last long, so invest in these high-quality materials.
Black and White T-Shirts
No questions asked. If you don’t have them already, you need one black t-shirt and one white t-shirt in your closet. They just go with everything on a casual day. Again, we recommend the brand Re/Done for 100% cotton.
Black Turtleneck
Do you get cold easily? A black turtleneck is essential for layering when the cold season approaches. You can wear it under that old graphic t-shirt you don’t know what to do with. Try layering it under the white blouse mentioned above. Or, you could always pair it with your black-wash denim jacket. If in doubt, wear it with your favourite pair of jeans. You can also tuck it into a pencil skirt for a more chic look. Boom! You already got FIVE outfits just from one black turtleneck! There’s your Monday-Friday OOTD’s sorted out!
White Sneakers
You need one pair of white tennis shoes for those days you’re running errands with maximum comfortability. We recommend the ever trendy Nike Air Force 1’s and Reebok tennis shoes. They are so timeless, they’ll never grow out of style.
Little Black Dress
Oh la la! From daytime hours to the nightlife, it’s just so perfect and versatile. You know that one little black dress that makes you feel like the sexiest woman alive? Don’t be so modest, you look amazing in it! This dress will come in handy as a cocktail dress for business events or even a romantic date night. And they’ll never know it was just one dress reused over and over again if you accessorize it differently each time.
Black Purse
Speaking of accessories, you need that one medium-sized black purse that will go with absolutely everything you own. Besides, you only really need one bag that stores everything you need: phone, lipstick, wallet, car keys, tampons, gum, a granola bar, socks, receipts, and whatever else you throw in there!
Black Boots
Black black black. Black everything. Black just universally matches with everything. Ignore those haters that mock you for looking like you’re going to a funeral. These black boots will match EVERYTHING we listed above. A rainy or snowy day? Throw on some chunky Doc Marten boots! Made for longevity, they can endure the toughest weathers and still last decades! The more you wear these Doc Martens, the comfier they get! So really, it’s a win-win and you can’t go wrong with a statement black pair of boots.
Nude Heels
Stick to neutral colours for heels and say goodbye to those ruby red slippers you only wore once as a Halloween costume. Neutral or nude heels will match with every dress you own. Say less.
Warm Jacket
Last but not least, you need a winter jacket! We live in Canada for goodness sake! Invest in a high quality jacket that will last you plenty of winters in order to stay warm and cozy!
